The Dogs took many valuable lessons from a hard-fought battle against the Lions in Round 6.

Speaking following the game, Head Coach Tam Hyett shared her thoughts on the game.

Here's what she had to say.

05:08

On opposition and the game:

“They’re a great side.

“They’ve been the league leaders since day dot.

"Disappointed that the outcome wasn’t there, there were areas where we were ok.

"Our ability to compete especially and turn the game into a bit more contested with the conditions definitely helped.

“I just said to the players that we’ve continually got to go to work.

"You work hard and that gives you good opportunities to win and the girls are working hard, so opportunities will still present.”

On Griggy and Rylie's toughness:

“Pound for pound, they’re pretty good.

“Griggy, her ability to hunt is really good and Ryls is way too brave.

“You can’t stop them from doing that because they’re ultra-competitive.

“There were some really good wins, there were some good things from different players today which was really good.”

On ball movement:

“That was probably the frustrating thing.

“We knew what they were going to give us and their ability to continuously turn up and then utilise the corridor with their uncontested marks killed us early.

“That’s something we spoke to the players about just closing the gap a little bit more.

"I think they were plus 42 in uncontested marks. That’s a massive gap that we need to be better at and that’s just about transition, so our ability to compete get up and go again.”

On Ellie Blackburn’s role and moving her back into the contest:

“Clearances haven't been an issue for us this year. What’s been an issue has been forward of the ball - that’s why her role has been up around stoppage, because she’s a really strong contested player and I think she’s had a great season.

"That ability to then connect and use her foot skills to get the ball into forward 50 has been really good.

“When the weather turned and it got a bit ugly, we knew it was going to be a bit more contested game and that’s why she spent more time with the mids in the second half.

“Just her ability in contest, in tight to give us metres gained is something that we needed.

“We’ve been really clear with her role and its ongoing communications. We’ve got to remember she’s coming back from a 12-month foot injury which I think sometimes is a bit forgotten.

“What she’s given us has been huge. Her ability to really lead this group with driving standards and behaviours has been really good.

“She’s as frustrated as anyone in that we’re not seeing the results. But, we’re doing a lot right.”

On Weston-Turner’s return:

“She competed well.

“I think she’s still learning that role, so the ability to continually compete. I mean it’s another level from scrimmage so definitely against a tougher opposition.

“I think she got herself into some really nice positions and she started to get better as the game wore on.

“She’ll be better to play at this level again. It’s almost been 12 months since she played at the level.

"The speed of the game is definitely something that she has got to continually get across."

On Lou Stephenson:

“Lou has been great.

“We talk about good habits and standards. That’s why we got her to the Club.

“She is a really experienced player and great to have in the locker room.

“She bloody works hard. It’s really good to see her to get on the end of a couple today.”

On Grand Final Eve at Mission Whitten Oval:

“We played the Grand Final Eve game last year as well. Public holiday so really looking forward to getting a lot of supporters out here at Mission Whitten Oval.

“It’ll be good fun.”
