Consistency was key for Rhylee West in 2025.
Entering his seventh season at the Kennel, the 25-year-old arguably enjoyed one of his best campaigns to date. A staple in the Bulldogs’ fast-scoring forward line, West held his own against opposition defenders, kicking a career-high 39 goals and featuring in every game of the season.
With Cody Weightman sidelined for the year, West was called upon to take on greater responsibility in the forward line.
It was a challenge he embraced, rising to the occasion and using the added pressure as motivation to push even harder.
“Having to adapt and play as a small forward is something that Bevo was really big on and something I had to learn to do,” West said
“I think, obviously with injuries to Cody this year, it left me down there by myself.
“I think a little bit more pressure and responsibility was on me this year. I felt like I dealt with it pretty well.”
West’s performances were a crucial part of the Bulldogs’ dynamic forward setup.
Anchored by the tall targets of Aaron Naughton and Sam Darcy, the Dogs consistently ranked among the top offensive teams in the competition, averaging a league-high 16 goals per game.
Their strength lay in the variety of scoring options - West, Naughton, and Darcy all contributing heavily - alongside a midfield group capable of regularly hitting the scoreboard.
West praised the growing synergy within the team, noting the benefits of consistent game time together.
“Naughts had a career-best season goals wise, same as Darc and myself,” he said
“I think we were able to adapt and work together to help each other to gives ourselves the best opportunity to score.
“I think it showed with being the number one offensive team in the league.
“Real positive outlook and hopefully we can be better in 2026.”
As one of the Club’s famed father-son talents, West also reflected on the special moment of seeing another family name added to the legacy when Jordan Croft made his debut against the Eagles in Round 23.
He spoke proudly of Croft’s development and the promise he brings to the forward line.
“Crofty debuting later in the season was awesome. Another father-son to add to the list,” he said
“His development over the couple of games he played was really good.
“He had a few injury hiccups from early in his career and in his first season.
“He really worked hard on his body and I think he’s always had the skillset.
“He was able to go out there and play really well for the games he was there. Hopefully he can have a big off-season and be back better and stronger.”
With 2025 now behind him, West’s focus has shifted to what lies ahead. He’s determined to build on his momentum and continue making his mark as one of the team’s most impactful players.
“We head into the off-season now and I definitely want more from an individual sense and a team sense,” he said
“Hopefully we can keep working on that and get back better and bigger in 2026.”
