AFLW assistant coach Toby McLean will depart the Bulldogs after accepting a full-time AFL development coaching role at Essendon FC.

McLean served as the Dogs’ AFLW midfield coach for the last two years, following a 102-game playing career in the red, white and blue.

He was also part of the drought-breaking 2016 AFL premiership team.

“I’ve absolutely loved my time with the AFLW Bulldogs and will miss being part of this program,” McLean said.

“While it wasn’t an easy decision to leave, the opportunity to enter full-time coaching at AFL level was too good to refuse.

“I couldn’t be more thankful to Tam (Hyett) and the Dogs for their support and trust in me over the past two years.

“I’ll be proudly watching the AFLW team from afar and can’t wait to see what they achieve in seasons to come.”

General Manager of Women’s Football Patrice Berthold thanked McLean for his contributions.

“Toby’s influence on our program over the past two seasons has been significant,” Berthold said.

“He’s widely respected across the industry, not just for his experience and football IQ, but for the genuine care and meaningful connections he builds with everyone he works with.

“While we’ll certainly miss seeing him in the red, white and blue, we’re incredibly grateful for his contribution and fully supportive of this exciting next step. We’re proud to have played a role in his growth as a coach.

“We wish him, Laura and Murphy all the best for the future.”
