When Matt Kennedy arrived at the Western Bulldogs 12 months ago, leadership was the furthest thing from the midfielder’s mind.

Beginning his second season in red, white and blue, the 28-year-old now has a formal role in the Club’s leadership group.

Kennedy was thrilled to be joining the eight-man group, with Rhylee West the other addition.

“It is very exciting, very humbling,” Kennedy said.

“When I came here I just wanted to put my head down and earn the respect of the group.

“In the leadership group, not much really changes I don’t think – I will still try to earn the respect and work hard.”

“If I can support the other leaders in any way I will, hopefully I can learn and grow in the role.”

The tenacious on-baller has had a meaningful impact both on and off the field in his first season, with the way he plays the game his key to leadership.

“My strengths are probably more off-field in terms of trying to help a few of the younger boys and learn from the challenges I faced early days.” Kennedy said.

“On-field I just want to lead by example, try and build energy and create that contest and intensity.”

Kennedy praised the decision for former vice-captain Tom Liberatore to step down and remain inside the group.

“Very selfless move from Libba,” he said.

“He is just a terrific people person – when I first got to the club he really embraced me and helped me learn the structures.

“I will still lean on him for advice – to have him around still will be great.”
