The Western Bulldogs women’s team was well represented at the VFL Best and Fairest count last night, with all three of the Club’s 2017 signings being named in the inaugural VFL Women’s Team of the Year.

Marquee players Katie Brennan and Ellie Blackburn were named at centre half forward and ruck rover respectively, while priority signing Emma Kearney was named in a back pocket after a standout year for Melbourne Uni.

Blackburn and Brennan both finished in the top four of the VFL Women’s Best and Fairest, separated by just the one vote, while Kearney finished in seventh place, 13 votes behind eventual winner Daisey Pearce.

Brennan in particular was a force all season, kicking 82 goals at an average of 4.3 per game for the Darebin Falcons to finish second on the League goal-kicking table behind Moana Hope.

All three players will play off at Piranha Park on the 18th of September when Brennan’s Falcons take on Blackburn and Kearney in Melbourne Uni colours in the VFL Women’s Grand Final.

But it wasn’t just the Bulldogs’ women being recognised for outstanding seasons on the VFL’s night of nights, with Footscray captain Jordan Russell being selected on the half back flank in the VFL.

The Footscray skipper led his side to a second Preliminary Final berth in three years on Sunday, submitting a 21 disposal, 10 mark performance to go along with 14 rebound 50s.
