Accuracy going into the forward line has guided the Western Bulldogs to their biggest win of the season, according to midfielder Marcus Bontempelli.

The Dogs collected 22 more inside 50s than Essendon, but the accuracy of their entries is what held the key said the 19-year-old.

“It’s really important that when we are going forward we’re hitting targets and making the most of our back half ball movement.

“It’s a great thing now that the backs are joining in and really getting some deep, long entries to our forwards and we’re always going to back them to either clunk it or bring it to ground and finish off their work.”

The Bulldogs only managed one first term goal to the Bombers zero, but quickly kicked away in the next three quarters to post 19 goals for the match.

Bontempelli said that while it was a relatively even contest in the opening term, the Bulldogs were pleased with their ability to put the foot down for the remainder of the match.

“Teams have tried to play us that way a little bit for the last six weeks, try and grind us out early and then hope that we’ll go away but we really stuck to it today and in the end we came home with the spoils.”

Bontempelli was one of several Bulldogs on their game on Sunday, collecting 24 disposals, four marks and four tackles – with disposal use a highlight of his game.

The young midfielder has continued to float forward at times and says he’s adjusting to both phases of the game.

“I’ve probably spent a bit more time up through the ‘guts’ this year… Being able to differentiate between the two and have an impact in both spots has been challenging, but I’m enjoying it and enjoying where the Club’s going.”
