For every weekend football isn’t played due to the suspension of the 2020 season, we’ll flash back to a past game against the same opponent, as a reminder of past Bulldog glories.  Today, it’s Port Adelaide.

Midway through the 2016 season, the Western Bulldogs travelled to South Australia to take on Port Adelaide at a ground where they were yet to create any positive memories.

Two previous trips to the revamped Adelaide Oval had ended in comfortable losses (both to Port) – by 72 points in 2014 and 38 points in 2015.

However, the Dogs were in good form leading into the Round 12 contest with eight wins from its 11 matches, while the Power had a 6-5 record and were coming off a 67-point thrashing of Collingwood at the MCG.

The Bulldogs started well that day, with Jack Redpath kicking three first-quarter goals to give his side a 10-point lead at the first change, and the visitors kept their noses in front by half time.

The Power grabbed the lead with back-to-back goals at the start of the third quarter, before the Dogs booted three of their own through Shane Biggs, Tom Liberatore and Jake Stringer.

But Port finished the term with the momentum, kicking the next three to lead by nine points at three-quarter time.

Not to be denied, the Bulldogs started the final stanza with three majors, but the margin was cut to one point when Charlie Dixon kicked truly at the 12-minute mark.

In a frenetic finish, a classy goal from Marcus Bontempelli gave the Dogs some breathing space, before Aaron Young reduced the margin to just three points with just seconds remaining.

The tri-colours hung on to record a memorable away win, in what later turned out to be a fairytale season.

The Bulldogs went on to lose their next three games at Adelaide Oval, before their season-defining 2019 victory at the venue against the Power.
