The Victorian Government has paved the way for clubs to resume training in groups of up to 10 - in a crucial milestone in the AFL’s quest to resume the 2020 season.

The AFL is expected to make an announcement this week regarding its plans for the return to training for all clubs, including at what stage they will be permitted to train in groups of larger than two people.

On Monday, Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews announced the easing of some restrictions relating to the coronavirus pandemic, including rules around social gatherings.

Of most significance to football was the allowance for larger groups to gather for sport, and for professional sporting bodies to use their own facilities in a safe and controlled way.

"There has been a lot of work with the AFL," Premier Andrews said.

"We have agreed to a set of arrangements to allow training to resume just before midnight tomorrow night (Tuesday).

"That paves the way for the AFL and the other codes to make announcements.

“Training resuming paves the way for footy to be back and I think we all want that provided it is safe, appropriate and can be done in a cautious way.

"I'm confident it can be...these are small steps, significant steps, though."
