Jamarra Ugle-Hagan had plenty on his mind as he made the journey to Melbourne from his Framlingham home for the 2020 NAB AFL Draft this week.

As he contemplated whether he’d be selected as the number one pick in the Draft, and if the Bulldogs would match the bid when it inevitably came, a moment of dread emerged – he had forgot his jeans at home.

One quick phone call later to Bulldogs’ skipper Marcus Bontempelli, and the crisis was over.

Jamarra and Bontempelli have already developed a close relationship, after the Dogs’ skipper hosted the budding star during a short training stint at VU Whitten Oval earlier this year.

Ugle-Hagan had already scored a free pair of boots and some other gear from that experience, so surely he’d have some joy asking to ‘borrow’ a pair of strides for the big Draft event?

“I woke up this morning and realised I didn’t have any jeans or anything, so I ended up messaging him,” Ugle-Hagan said.

“He rang me straight away and he’s like, alright mate, come and pick them up at 1.  He’s looked after me a fair bit.

“I stayed with him when he was announced captain, and it was a great opportunity to be there at that time.

“He’s someone I look up to, and be a sponge on.”
