Welcome to Spurling Reserve, the historic home of Whitten Oval and the Western Bulldogs Football Club.
For over half a century, Spurling Reserve was the official name of the Whitten Oval precinct, honouring David Spurling and the Spurling family—generous benefactors to Melbourne’s western suburbs through their extensive financial and land contributions.
The family also left its mark on the football field. Bill Spurling played 98 games for Footscray and represented Victoria in the 1930s, while Bob Spurling made six senior appearances in the 1960s.
Today, the reserve stands as a lasting tribute to the Spurling family’s deep connection to the community and the Club, including their support in the construction of the original E.J. Whitten Stand in 1969.
