FRIDAY night's realestate.com.au AFLX tournament is set to feature plenty of high marking, long-range goals and electric speed.

Three Western Bulldogs players will take part in the tournament, captain Easton Wood, vice-captain Marcus Bontempelli and reigning Club best and fairest Lachie Hunter.

Bontempelli and Hunter will line-up for Nat Fyfe’s Flyers, while Wood will join Jack Riewoldt on the Rampage.

AFLX is a modified version of Australian rules football, with the biggest variation coming with the rectangular 110m (L) x 70m (W) field.

There are a number of other changes to have been introduced for this season, which are detailed below ahead of the one-night event at Marvel Stadium.

See below to get your refresher of the AFLX rules in its second season.

Teams

  • This year there are four teams taking part in the AFLX tournament – Team Deadly (to be captained by Eddie Betts), Team Bolts (Patrick Dangerfield), Team Flyers (Nat Fyfe) and Team Rampage (Jack Riewoldt).
  • All four captains picked their teams in the inaugural AFLX Draft, with replacements named for injured/unavailable players.
  • This differs from last season when the 18 AFL clubs fielded their own sides in three separate tournaments played in Adelaide, Sydney and Melbourne.
  • Teams consist of 14 players, eight on the field and six on the interchange. There are two defenders, one midfielder, one ruckman, two wingmen and two forwards per side.

The game

The rules and unique innovations for AFLX

  • Goals kicked from inside the launch zone (see graphic) are worth 10 points. A 10-point goal will also be awarded if a player kicks from within or behind the launch zone and the ball is marked inside the 15m forward zone by a teammate who then scores a goal.
  • When a deliberate rushed behind is awarded the team will receive one point on the scoreboard and one free set shot.
  • There will be a 10-second shot clock for players lining up at goal, down from the 30 seconds made available during the premiership season.
  • Players will be able to run 20m without bouncing the ball, with the AFL hoping it will encourage those involved to take the game on.
  • A 25m penalty will be paid by the umpire, rather than the existing 50m penalty for the home and away season.
  • A player has the opportunity to play on from out of bounds after the 'last touch' rule.

The Gatorade Game Changer

  • In a unique initiative, teams will get to nominate a Gatorade Game Changer, with that player's score worth double during the last five minutes of the match.
  • The scoring system: a behind will be worth two points, a goal 12 points and a supergoal 20 points from that nominated player.
  • After teams nominate their game changers with five minutes to play, the match will stop for 30 seconds for game changers to get in position, with the team in possession to retain the ball after the break. If the ball is in dispute, the umpire will throw it up where the game was stopped.
  • The game changer will wear a different jumper to the ones worn by his teammates but in the same colour blend as the side he plays for.

Entertainment

  • Dedicated kids zones along the boundary line featuring novelty-sized games, face painters, balloon artists and giveaways.
  • Slides, ball pits, obstacles, jumping mats, tackle bags and footballs for children.
  • A rock-climbing wall at the stadium for all ages to enjoy.
  • Roving entertainment including aerial artists, magicians, hula-hoop artists and acrobats.
  • LED goalposts to light up after goals and behinds.

Where to watch

  • The realestate.com.au AFLX 2019 tournament will be available live from 7pm AEDT via AFL.com.au and the AFL Live App. The Seven Network and Fox Footy will also broadcast the tournament.
