Two young Dogs re-sign

Bright Bulldog future: Porter and Sweet re-sign Hear from Callum Porter and Jordon Sweet following their one-year contract extensions, which will see them at the Western Bulldogs until the end of 2020.

Developing midfielder Callum Porter and rookie ruckman Jordon Sweet have recommitted to the Western Bulldogs.

The yet-to-debut duo have signed one-year contract extensions to stay at VU Whitten Oval until at least the end of 2020.

Both have been listed as emergencies at AFL level this season.

Porter, 20, is in his second season at the Bulldogs after being recruited with pick 74 in the 2017 NAB AFL Draft.

He has averaged 17.4 disposals in his 15 games at VFL level this season, including a season-high 35 disposals against Essendon last week.

Porter said working with the coaches and learning from the likes of Josh Dunkley, Tom Liberatore and Marcus Bontempelli had helped him develop his game.

“I’ve loved my first couple of years at the club, and I’m glad to have another year here,” he said.

“It’s been a really enjoyable time and the growth I’ve had as a player on and off the field has been great.

“This year I’ve been able to really crack in and improve my game. I’m developing my midfield craft and all the aspects of being an on-baller, and I’ve got some great guys to follow at this footy club.”

Sweet, 21, joined the Club with pick 23 in last year’s NAB AFL Rookie Draft.

He has averaged 37.6 hit-outs across his 13 games for Footscray in 2019, including totals of 50 or more in four of his past six outings.

For Sweet, his first season in an AFL environment has been a great learning experience.

“I’ve enjoyed my time here so far, the boys have been really good and I’m stoked to sign on for another year,” he said.

“This year has been a good learning curve for me. I feel like my ruck craft has developed, particularly since the bye, and I’m working on my around the ground work. I just want to keep focusing on getting better every day.”

The duo joins a lengthy list of players to recommit to the Club in 2019, including the likes of Dunkley, Aaron Naughton, Tim English, Pat Lipinski, Lewis Young, Lachie Young and Fergus Greene who are also aged 22 or under.

General Manager of List and Recruiting, Sam Power, said both players had shown plenty of promise this season.

“Cal is a physical player, he’s hard at the contest and is selfless and team-oriented in his approach to the game,” Power said.

“We’ve been really pleased with his development and are excited to see him pushing for opportunities at senior level.

“Jordon’s had a promising debut season and been exposed to significant ruck time at VFL level.

“He’s striving to play senior football, and we’ve seen positives in his ruck craft and his ability to give our midfielders first use around the ground.”
