The Western Bulldogs have claimed a thrilling two-point victory over Port Melbourne, holding on in a 5.6 (36) to 5.4 (34) result at ETU Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
With both sides entering the clash eager to strengthen their top-four aspirations, the contest was fiercely fought from the opening bounce.
Under clear skies, the first quarter saw both teams match each other around the ball, generating strong inside 50 opportunities as the scoreboard saw an even start.
The Bulldogs responded to a strong competition from the hosts, kicking two crucial goals late into the second term, which left them in a narrow lead going into the main break.
The visitors' efficiency in front of goal in the third quarter proved a key factor, making the most of their opportunities to maintain their narrow advantage.
With the game on the line, both teams struggled to convert in front of goal during a tense final term.
The Borough continued to press in search of a match-winning score, but the Bulldogs’ defense stood firm.
À late minor that proved the ultimate difference, the Bulldogs secured the win and a top four spot in the process.
Jorja Livingstone stood tall on the Bulldogs’ stats with 23 disposals and one goal.
Jemima Wrigley controlled the game with eight intercept possessions with four score involvements, while Ellie Bishop provided eight clearances and 15 contested possessions.
Head coach Liam Cavanagh was really happy to see his side take home the win.
“We had the same wins and losses, so we knew it would be really tough,” said Cavanagh.
"We’ve never been in that place to [win] like that.
"We are seeing a team that is really connected and mature, with knowing what to do in the right moments.”
The Western Bulldogs are on the road again next week, taking on Williamstown in a VFL/VFLW double header, at DSV Stadium on Saturday.
