The VFLW Western Bulldogs have claimed a hard-fought 10-point victory, defeating Essendon 5.2 (32) to 3.4 (22) on a cold Friday night.

Essendon made a stronger start to the game, controlling the opening quarter with repeat forward 50 entries and sustained pressure.

Despite this, the Bulldogs' defence held firm in the early challenge before a late surge around the contest helped shift the momentum.

The second quarter was an arm wrestle, with both sides competing fiercely at the stoppages.

The hosts began to generate more inside 50 opportunities but struggled to convert, while Essendon's inaccuracy in front of goal ensured the Bulldogs remained within reach heading into the main break.

After half time, the Bulldogs lifted their work rate and started to gain control.

Cleaner ball movement and strong defensive pressure allowed the Bulldogs to create repeat forward entries while limiting Essendon's scoring chances.

The hosts carried that momentum into the final term, while the visitors continued to apply pressure in search of a comeback.

But the Bulldogs stood tall when it mattered most, with Emmy Nekrep's third goal of the night proving the sealer to run out 10-point winners.

Jorja Livingstone had a dazzling game with 36 disposals and seven inside-50s.

Jaimi Tabb was impactful with 11 tackles and six contested possessions, while Nekrep hit the scoreboard with three goals.

Head coach Liam Cavanagh was ecstatic after the win.

“We were calm and in control,” said Cavanagh.

“The girls did a good job when the ball was overturned, getting back in the game and getting the lead again.”

When asked about a word that would describe this win, Cavanagh had just one: “Relieved.”

The victory sends the Bulldogs into a Round 10 bye with momentum, before returning to VFLW action in Round 11 against Sandringham.
