The key takeaways from the Pups' first match simulation against Hawthorn.

1.Shaking off the cobwebs

With 250-odd days between competitive hit-outs, there was bound to be some rusty moments.

After a sluggish start, what was really encouraging was how the Bulldogs were able to apply some of the adjustments from half-time into the third quarter.

Despite the windy conditions and ability to create opportunities forward of the ball, it was a lack of polish in key moments that proved costly and allowed the Hawks to intercept easily and convert the other way.

2.Pressure and contest

The Dogs' pressure was a major positive early, with players continually competing around the ball, laying tackles and closing in on the quick Hawks.

Their willingness to chase and apply repeat efforts across all lines was important, but to really arrest momentum and impact they will need to do it for longer periods.

3.Squad in good shape

A luxury for the Dogs this match simulation was the health and availability of the squad, with the majority of the group able to play across the four 20-minute quarters at different times.

Off-season recruit Mikala Cann stood out in the midfield, while Mizuki Brothwell and Amaia Wain had some good moments in defence.

With a second match simulation scheduled for next Friday afternoon at home, the group will have another opportunity to build more chemistry and connection as preparations continue for Round 1.
