It was the shift that invigorated Caleb Daniel’s season.

The 167cm midfielder transitioned to defence in the back half of 2018, where his run and elite ball skills shone.

“It was probably a slow start from him, but we exposed him to different roles throughout the season and he really found his form late as a high defender,” said Dogs’ assistant coach, Daniel Giansiracusa.

“We know how composed he is with the footy.  He’s obviously quite small but he found a way in the combative side of the game. That’s where his strengths really shone, especially in the back half of the year.”

Daniel averaged 30 disposals in his last four games as he found a new home among the likes of seasoned defenders Dale Morris and Jason Johannisen.

“We want to get the ball in Caleb’s hands because he creates opportunities.  He’s got that risk and reward aspect to him and it usually comes off when he’s got his hands on the footy,” Giansiracusa said.

“He’s a great defensive player in terms of setting up a layer and being that person that it’s hard for the opposition to come through.

“He’s really consistent with that and it’s something that’s valuable inside the group.”
