Expectation has surrounded the Western Bulldogs this pre-season, but star midfielder Jack Macrae says that’s not a bad thing.

The Bulldogs will have their first proper hit-out for 2020 tonight, against North Melbourne, in a Marsh Community Series match under the Marvel Stadium roof.

Macrae says there is excitement as the Bulldogs look to kick off the year on the right foot.

“Expectation is a good thing, it means you’re doing something right,” he told 3AW Sportsday this week.

“I think the way we finished the back half of the year (in 2019), there’s no reason why if we bring that kind of footy that we can’t have a terrific full season rather than just the second half.

“Expectation brings a bit of pressure, but it’s nothing we’re completely new to.”

Macrae earned All Australian selection in 2019 and was recently named to represent Victoria in the State of Origin for Bushfire Relief match.

The 25-year-old was one of three Bulldogs selected for the match – with Marcus Bontempelli representing Victoria and Jason Johannisen representing the All Stars – and hopes he can continue to improve his game this year.

“You don’t play footy for the accolades… but it’s always really nice, and a great little tip of the hat when it comes along,” Macrae said.

“It’s really exciting to get the recognition to play for Victoria and also represent the bushfire appeal and do my bit there.

“I’m coming into the prime of my career and there’s no reason I can’t continue to improve, and I see that as exciting rather than something that comes with pressure.

“I can’t wait to play this Friday and start the season strong.”
