St Albans and St Andrews Primary Schools reigned supreme at the 2011 Multicultural Schools Cup earlier this week, as the Western Bulldogs hosted the sixth edition of the competition at John McLeod Reserve, Deer Park.

Grade Five and Six students from eight primary schools across the western suburbs contested the lightning premiership style competition.

St Albans Primary School claimed the boys premiership while St Andrews Primary School claimed the girls premiership. The wins made it back-to-back titles for both schools.

Both schools will now go on to the State Multicultural Cup to represent the Western Bulldogs.

The Multicultural Schools Cup is for primary schools across the Western Region that participate in the Western Bulldogs’ Multicultural Schools Football Program (MSFP).

Schools involved in the MSFP complete a series of football clinics over five weeks, culminating in the Multicultural Schools Cup. For many program participants, this is their first taste of Australian Rules Football.

The Multicultural Schools Cup is an opportunity for all schools that have participated in the MSFP to come together and showcase the skills they have learned in a fun and safe environment.

The program is run with the help of Victoria University pre-service teachers.

Deer Park Junior Football Club helped facilitate Wednesday competition, with many MSFP students expressing interest to join up to the club.

The eight schools that participated in the 2011 Multicultural Schools Cup were Footscray Primary, Ardeer Primary, St Albans North Primary, St Albans Primary, St Albans Heights Primary, St Andrews Primary, Footscray Primary and Sunshine Harvester Primary.

Harmony Awards were also given to students that displayed sportsmanship, teamwork, leadership and fair play throughout the program and also on the day.
