The Western Bulldogs fought fiercely but were defeated by North Melbourne Werribee in a tough, wet contest at Arden Street Oval.

The Bulldogs trailed by nine points at the last break, but the reigning premiers flexed their muscles at home to run out 6.7 (43) to 3.4 (22) winners.

The Kangaroos set the pace early with a rapid start, applying the pressure in challenging conditions. The Bulldogs responded with goals from Ellie Bishop and Mali McLeod, keeping the margin close at the first change.

A highlight came in the second quarter when Emma McDonald soared for a spectacular low-to-the-ground mark before calmly converting to briefly put the Dogs ahead.

However, North quickly regained control, edging ahead again by half time.

The Bulldogs created several scoring chances in the third term and showed resilience in crucial moment.

Despite their efforts, the Bulldogs couldn’t break North's defence in the final term, with the hosts holding on for a 21-point victory.

Keeley Hardingham was dominant in the ruck, finishing with 37 hit-outs and eight clearances, while Bishop led the midfield with 19 disposals.

Jaimi Tabb and Jess Fitzgerald brought relentless energy around the contest, consistently challenging their opponents.

The red, white and blue will be eager to bounce back when they face the Hawks at Box Hill City Oval next Saturday 24 May at 2:35 pm AEST.
