Footscray have begun their 2026 VFL Smithy’s title defence in emphatic fashion, recording a 43-point victory over the Casey Demons in their Round 1 clash at Mission Whitten Oval.
On a day when the club welcomed back members of the 2025 premiership side to unfurl the flag, the Dogs ensured the celebrations were capped off with a commanding performance.
After a see-sawing first half, Footscray put their foot down after the main break, with a dominant seven-goals-to-three third quarter setting up the win.
Will Lewis starred up forward for the ‘Scray, kicking a game-high six goals, four of which came in a blistering third-quarter run.
Down the other end of the ground, defender Nick Coffield was outstanding, collecting 32 disposals, taking 16 marks and providing important run and drive from defence throughout the afternoon.
Footscray’s midfield was also a clear class above their Casey opposition. Adam Treloar (33 disposals, six tackles), Billy Crofts (22 disposals, 12 contested possessions) and Cooper Craig-Peters (21 disposals, 10 contested possessions) all played key roles in helping the Dogs consistently move the ball into their attacking half.
Quarter one
It was a scrappy start for both sides as they looked to shake off the pre-season cobwebs early.
Despite several opportunities in front of goal, neither team was able to capitalise until a goal on debut from Ged Saunders broke the deadlock for the Dogs.
Jack Billings was lively early for Footscray, creating multiple opportunities in the forward half, while Adam Treloar looked right at home back in the thick of things, registering 10 disposals in the opening term.
The quarter finished with a flurry of Dogs’ goals, as Will Lewis, Jack Billings and Lachlan Smith all hit the scoreboard to give Footscray a 16-point lead at the first break.
Quarter two
The arm wrestle continued in the second quarter, with both teams again struggling to make the most of their chances in front of goal.
Led by Nick Coffield and Ryan Gardner, the Dogs held strong when faced with repeat forward-half entries from the Demons.
Footscray were able to get their running game going later in the term, with Arty Jones finding space across the wing and breaking the lines with his evasive run.
Youngsters Josh Dolan and Luke Kennedy added goals, before a composed set shot from Billy Crofts put the icing on the cake as the half-time siren sounded.

Quarter three
The Dogs were finally off the leash in the third term, as the midfield went to work around the contest.
With Lachlan Smith combining well with captain Dan Orgill, alongside Adam Treloar, Billy Crofts and Cooper Craig-Peters, Footscray piled on seven goals to three for the quarter.
It was all Will Lewis in the third, as he caused constant problems for the Casey defence, kicking four goals for the term.
Cooper Craig-Peters also provided a moment of inspiration, slotting one of the goals of the day from beyond the 50-metre arc.
Footscray took a 34-point lead into the final change.
Quarter four
It would have been easy for the Dogs to put the cue in the rack and simply defend their lead in the final term.
Instead, they came out with the same attacking intent, continuing the momentum built in the third quarter.
As was the case throughout the day, Footscray’s scoring was driven by the defenders’ consistency behind the ball, making it difficult for Casey to find time and space in their attacking half.
The Dogs continued to find goals, with Jack Billings, Lachlan Smith and Arty Jones all kicking their second of the afternoon to seal a comprehensive 43-point victory.
