The crucial work of Sons of the West (SOTW) has continued as an online program in 2020, despite the stage four restrictions facing Victorians due to coronavirus.

The Western Bulldogs Community Foundation’s flagship men’s health program has become a beacon of strength for males living in the west, over an extended period of time.

And with the challenges facing all Victorians with the lockdown rules in place, taking care of your mental and physical health is as important as ever.

SOTW aims to empower men in the west to lead healthier lives by providing education, physical activity opportunities and a supportive social network.

The EJ Whitten Foundation is a proud partner of the program, and it plays a similarly vital role in encouraging men to look after their health and wellbeing.

Its message is simple – the key to a happy, healthy and successful ‘you’ is to look after yourself physically, mentally, and socially and check in with your GP annually for a health check.

EJ’s guide for good health in lockdown:

  • Exercise - Get outside and go for a walk or run.
  • Stay Mobile – It is important for muscles and joints to be stretched daily and remain mobile. Try the 60 second mobility sequence from Robert Jackson, a fitness expert who works in the AFL.
  • Connection - Stay connected with friends and family through platforms like HouseParty, Facetime or Zoom.  It’s great for your mental and social well-being.
  • Laughter - Keep the laughter flowing during your connection with friends and family.
  • Sleep - No late nights, avoid watching LED screens in bed. A good night's sleep is vital for your health.
  • Time to Test – Use this period to book in for a men’s health check with your doctor.
  • Ask for help - Tell someone if you a struggling.  We are isolating, but not isolated.
