5: Libba lands Giant blow

The rivalry between the Western Bulldogs and GWS Giants continues to grow each year.

And this game had a huge impact on the Bulldogs’ season.

After two disappointing losses to start 2020 – against Collingwood and St Kilda, either side of the shutdown period – it was all on the line for the Bulldogs against the Giants.

Particularly after the disappointing exit to the orange team in 2019’s elimination final, where the Giants got one over the Bulldogs – physically, and on the scoreboard.

This match was a completely different story from the outset.

Surprisingly, Nick Haynes walked out for the coin toss instead of captain Stephen Coniglio – but that did little to ruffle the feathers of Bulldogs’ skipper Marcus Bontempelli.

The Bulldogs started strongly and were unrelenting across the four quarters, claiming a four-goal win.

They led by 20 points at half time, but it arguably should have been a bigger lead after dominating proceedings.

Three-quarter time produced the biggest moment of the game.

As a scuffle broke out on the siren between the two teams, Tom Liberatore went back and converted a set shot.

The Bulldogs went into the final change with all the momentum – and a 26-point lead.

Liberatore made an immediate impact in his return from injury, playing his first game of 2020. He had 18 disposals and four clearances, to go with his goal.

All Australian pair Jack Macrae and Caleb Daniel were also prolific, as was off-season recruit Alex Keath in defence.
