He was one of the most admired Bulldogs of his time, but there’s much more to Daniel Southern than meets the eye.

As Easton Wood takes a well-earned spell from the Barkly Street podcast this week, his co-host Bob Murphy has the honour of chatting to Southern about his extraordinary life, both on and off the field.

Southern was the hugely popular winner of the #BarklyStreet fan vote to uncover the most iconic Bulldog hairstyle, which he won in a canter from Dr Gary Zimmerman, Simon Atkins and Bailey Smith.

In a fascinating chat, Bob and Daniel discuss:

  • Southern’s description of his own iconic hairstyle, and its incredible versatility.
  • Recollections of Southern’s last season in 2000, Bob’s first in the AFL.
  • Dealing with the knee injury which ultimately ended Southern’s career.
  • Masculinity being a big part of footy in the 90s, and how things have changed since.
  • Struggling to find his identity and finding clarity post football.
  • Travelling to Kenya and swapping his disposable camera for a spear which belonged to a Maasai Warrior.
  • Feeling the love of the Bulldogs supporters throughout his career.
  • Playing in the fearsome and successful Bulldogs teams in late 90s.
  • Leaving school at 14 years of age to follow his football dream.
  • Spending his spare time as footballer ‘seeking refuge’ at local libraries, learning about first nations cultures.
  • Moving to in Cairo, Egypt, leading adventure tours for Intrepid Travel.
  • His current role with the AFL Players Association in Perth.
  • His view on the current Bulldogs team.
