3: Huntington’s honours

Izzy Huntington won’t be forgetting season 2020 anytime soon.
The forward-turned-defender rarely put a foot wrong this year, ranking equal-first for contested marks and second for intercept possessions across the competition.

Her efforts saw her take home the 2020 NAB AFLW Rising Star awardbecoming the inaugural Bulldog to do so, while also claiming her first best and fairest.

Huntington’s accolades didn’t stop there however – also earning a maiden Toyota AFLW All-Australian selection, and named in the AFLPA 22under22 team.

The 21-year-old played all but one game in 2020, bringing her career tally to 10 AFLW matches since being selected with Pick 1 in the 2017 draft.

It hasn’t all been smooth sailing though, having had to overcome ACL ruptures on both knees, a broken right leg, cartilage damage and a knee sprain all in the past six years.

I haven’t played (this many) games in a row for a very long time,” Huntington said after the Bulldogs’ final game of the season.

I think every game you play, you build a bit more confidence in the game-style, but also in the body and my knees – it’s been really nice.”
