Western Bulldogs in partnership with Victoria University are excited to be once again delivering the successful Graduate Certificate in Strength & Conditioning in 2024.

As part of continual improvement, a new subject has been added to the course to better align with students’ learning outcomes and broader industry trends.

Monitoring Performance and Recovery in Athletes has been added to the four-unit line-up that constitutes the Graduate Certificate. The long-standing Masters-level subject has been well-loved by students for many years and is now an inclusion for Graduate Certificate students in 2024 and beyond.

Similar to the subject that it will replace (Data Management in Sport), Monitoring Performance and Recovery in Athletes is fully delivered online, through a mixture of real-time online tutorials and self-paced learning modules and assessments. This method of delivery allows students to fit their study around other work/life commitments, and study at a time and place that suits them.

It is believed that this subject fits superbly with the other three subjects that make up the Graduate Certificate, and comprehensively rounds out the coursework students complete alongside their industry experience with the Western Bulldogs. It completes the journey of an athlete and allows students more opportunity to apply their learnings in a logical sequence through the duration of the six-month course.

The full subject delivery in 2024 includes:

  • Block 1: Developing Muscular Strength and Power
  • Block 2: Improving Speed Agility and Endurance
  • Block 3: Monitoring Performance and Recovery in Athletes
  • Block 4: Return to Play

You can learn more about this subject at SES6000 - Monitoring Performance and Recovery in Athletes and the Graduate Certificate in full at Graduate Certificate in Sport and Exercise Science.

Enrolments for 2024 are now open, and interested students are encouraged to express their interest early. Places in the course are limited to ensure small and collaborative class sizes.

Unit Overview

Sports scientists must be able to monitor their athletes on a daily basis. Athlete load can be monitored internally (how the athlete feels) and externally (the work the athlete does during training) which can then be used as a marker of the athlete's adaptation to their training program. This unit will give students exposure to the various methods of athlete monitoring and provide a framework for integrating this information into a single interface. Students will gain an understanding of the theory and application of athlete monitoring including; jump testing, GPS tracking, training load monitoring, match load and markers of adaptation to training load (including maladaptation), recovery, sleep, and travel. Students will develop the ability to critically appraise the various monitoring variables used by sports scientists.

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this unit, students will be able to:

  1. Contextualise and critique the different types of monitoring tools available in sport;
  2. Design a plan which combines a range of monitoring tools and reflect different methods of data collection;
  3. Interpret results from a range of monitoring tools and implement different statistical methods to determine athlete responses and variations;
  4. Consolidate results from various tools into a recommendation on subsequent load and recovery for an individual athlete; and
  5. Translate monitoring results and analysis to coaches, athletes and the wider community via various communication methods.
